PhD Scholarship - Single and Two-Phase Flow Heat Transfer in Novel Heat Exchangers Manufactured Usin

Background

Brunel University London and TWI are offering a 3-year fully funded PhD Scholarship in Heat Transfer in novel Heat Exchangers.

The scope of the project is to study experimentally the fluid flow characteristics and heat transfer rates in novel heat exchangers. The research will start with single-phase measurements of pressure drop and heat transfer rates and continue with similar measurements in flow boiling. In this part, flow visualization will also be carried out using a high-speed, high-resolution camera to study the prevailing flow patterns in the heat exchangers channels. The effect of the channel characteristics (dimensions and surface roughness) on flow patterns, pressure drop and heat transfer rates will be assessed as part of this study. An existing experimental facility will be used for this purpose and the heat exchanger test sections will manufactured at TWI using a newly patented process called friction stir channelling. Technical support for the research work is available at Brunel for the experimental part. A team of experts in welding at TWI will support and manufacture the heat exchanger test sections at the specifications required. The successful research candidate will work closely with the supervisory team to help the introduction of these novel heat exchangers to relevant industries by evaluating the techno-economics of this technique and comparing it with other heat exchanger manufacturing methods.

Scholarship amount

The scholarship covers the university tuition fees plus a salary of £20,000 per year for three years.
