Introduction to the UK Heat Transfer Conferences Series
The UK Heat Transfer Conference is the premier forum in the UK for the local and international heat transfer community to meet, disseminate ongoing work and discuss the latest advances in the Heat Transfer field.
The 2019 Edition
The 16th UK Heat Transfer Conference was held at the University of Nottingham on 8th-10th September 2019 and followed the 2017 edition held at Brunel University London and the 2015 edition at the University of Edinburgh. This edition was Chaired by Professor Yuying Yan.
The Conference Chair Professor Yuying Yan opened the conference and introduced key features of the conference including numbers of submissions, accepted extended abstracts, springer conference proceedings, etc. Professor Andy Long, Provost & Deputy Vice-Chancellor gave an enthusiastic welcome speech and made a brief introduction of the University of Nottingham. The Chair of
UK National Heat Transfer Committee, Professor Tassos Karayiannis provided an overview of research developments of heat transfer in the UK. This was followed by a Eulogy for Professor Geoffrey Hewitt (Imperial College London) Professor Joe Quarini) (University of Bristol).
There were six plenary lectures:
Professor Omar Matar (Imperial College London): Multiscale modelling of boiling flows
Dr Cedric Rouaud (Ricardo Plc): xEV thermal management – heat transfer improvement requirements
Professor Peixue Jiang (Tsinghua University): Phenomenon and mechanism of spray cooling and supercritical-pressure fluid Impingement cooling on micro/nano hybrid structures
Professor Josua Meyer (University of Pretoria): A new perspective on internal forced and mixed convection heat transfer
Dr Jonathan McDonough (Newcastle University): A perspective on the current and future roles of additive manufacturing in process engineering with an emphasis on heat transfer [presentation]
Dr Ryan McGlen (Aavid Thermacore Europe Ltd.): Additive Manufactured Heat Pipe Technology
The scientific programme consisted of more than 160 oral presentations and 30 posters dealing with various aspects of heat transfer, from fundamentals to applications. The conference was particularly well attended from both academia and industry, with the participation of over 260 scientific delegates from 27 different countries.
At the conference, the first Geoffrey Hewitt Prize for best PhD thesis in the UK in Heat Transfer was awarded to Dr. Sahin Yigit for this work on the subject of Natural Convection of Non-Newtonian Fluids in Enclosed Spaces.

The industrial contribution (including papers authored by Rolls Royce, Siemens, Ricardo PLC, Aavid Thermacore Europe Ltd, SWEP International AB, Denso Marston Ltd, ACPI Ltd amongst others) was particularly well received, with a number of exhibitors showcasing their technologies. The conference proved to be a lively environment for the Heat Transfer Community to meet, present the latest advances and exchange ideas.
The conference proceedings will be published by Springer. Selected papers from the conference will be published on special issues of Applied Thermal Engineering, Heat and Mass Transfer, Thermal Science and Engineering Progress, Heat Transfer Engineering, Journal Bionic Engineering, Automotive Innovation.
The next edition will be held at the University of Manchester in 2021.
