In Memoriam: Professor Brian Spalding

November 30, 2016

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Professor Brian Spalding’s on Sunday 27th November. Professor Spalding was universally recognised as one of founders and one of the most influential persons in the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Professor Spalding was born in 1923 at New Malden, Surrey, England and obtained his BA degree in Engineering Science at Oxford University in 1944, and in 1952 his PhD at Cambridge for a thesis on the combustion of liquid fuels. In 1954 he joined Imperial College London as a Reader in Applied Heat, in 1958 he was appointed Professor of Heat Transfer and was subsequently also Head of the Computational Fluid Dynamics Unit. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1983 and retired from Imperial college London in 1988.

The UK National Heat Transfer Committee would like to express its condolences to the family and join them in mourning their loss.
